About this rug

Three stepped medallions, each holding a green leaf shape, run down the long panel of this charming runner. Across a burgundy field, three stepped medallions run down a long panel, each holding a green leaf shape with small navy and orange stars around it. Small octagons in teal and navy sit beside the medallions, and tiny stars and lozenges fill the red between them. A gorgeous cream and black key meander runs around the panel, with a zigzag stripe at both ends. The main border is deep red, carrying rows of eight-pointed stars and lozenges in navy, cream and orange. The pile is worn thin through the center and at one upper corner, where the weave shows. It grounds a tight hallway, and the deep red anchors the bright small figures. At 3'10" by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ghoochan rugs

Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. Ghoochan sits in the north of Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, and the weaving shows it. You get the repeating geometric figures of the northeast rather than the curves of the Persian center, worked in madder red and dark blue. This runner keeps those repeating geometric figures, with small stars and octagons across the panel and the border. One long stepped panel sits inside a wide border, in place of a single center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
