An all-over lattice of cream-outlined lozenges covers this delightful runner. Splendid stepped diamonds and small geometric figures fill the deep red field in a repeating column down the length. There is no single medallion, only an all-over lattice of cream-outlined lozenges holding dark centers with tiny green and blue marks. The main border is narrow, a cream chain on a dark red ground, edged by narrow guard stripes of zigzag and dotted lines in red and cream. The pile is full across the face and in the borders. It holds a strong red line down a passage, with the cream lattice keeping the drawing clear. At 3'10" by 8'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ghoochan rugs
Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. Ghoochan lies in northern Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, and the weaving shows it. The designs are the repeating geometric figures of the northeast rather than the curves of the Persian center, worked in madder red and dark blue. This runner keeps that repeating geometry, with stepped diamonds marching down the field instead of curling vines. The dark blue is kept to small accents inside the lozenges, leaving the madder red to carry almost the whole rug.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
