Stepped diamond guls in a dense lattice make this a lovely rug. Stepped diamond guls fill the deep red field in a dense repeating lattice, each holding a red cross inside a near-black outline and edged with hooked meander lines in copper. Smaller diamond figures in gray, cream and teal sit in the spaces between. There is no central medallion. A dark brown main border carries a row of small red arches outlined in tan, framed by narrow tan and red guard stripes. The pile is low across much of the field, and the weave shows through in places. It grounds a passage with its deep red and its even rows of diamonds. At 3'9" by 8'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ghoochan rugs
Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. In the north of Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, Ghoochan shows that closeness in its weaving. Its rugs carry the repeating geometric figures of the northeast, not the curves of the Persian center, in madder red. This runner holds that angular spirit in its rows of stepped diamonds. The small gray and teal figures between them are the one cool note on the red.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
