About this rug

Three rectangular panels on a deep red field make this a remarkable rug. Worked on a deep red field, three large rectangular panels run down the center, each filled with diagonal rows of small S-hooks in red on burgundy and dark blue stripes. Cream and black brackets frame each panel, with large arrow shapes pointing out to the sides. Charming dark octagonal rosettes with red and green interlace ring the panels in the red space. A narrow border of stepped diamonds in cream, black and red edges the rug. Full pile covers the face, keeping the geometric lines sharp and the colors strong. The saturated red ground warms a long passage. At 3'8" by 8'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ghoochan rugs

Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. Ghoochan sits in the north of Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, and the weaving shows it. You get the repeating geometric figures of the northeast rather than the curves of the Persian center, worked in madder red and dark blue. This runner keeps those repeating geometric figures, with dark octagonal guls ringing the field in a strong red. Rather than a simple all-over repeat, the three large panels give the field a structured central column.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
