About this rug

This lovely rug has a near-black lattice over its deep red field. A deep red field holds an all-over lattice of near-black lines, with small plant forms and violet leaves inside each diamond. No central medallion breaks the repeat, which runs the full length of the runner. The gorgeous main border is a row of small triangles in camel, violet, teal and red between near-black lines. Narrow guard stripes of sawtooth teeth in red and near-black edge the border on both sides. The pile is low in places, and two paler bands cross the field where the red reads paler still. It holds a long passage together, the near-black lattice keeping the red from feeling too bright. At 3'7" by 8'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Among the Baluch a bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow often meant for the dowry, and balishts were usually woven in pairs. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This runner keeps that repeating design, with violet and near-black set against the red ground. The diamond lattice runs down the whole length, the same motif worked over and over.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
