A column of five octagonal guls makes this a charming runner. The burgundy field holds a column of five octagonal guls, the tribal emblem, worked in deep red and near-black with small cream centers. Stepped motifs flank each medallion along the length of the runner. A black cherry main border carries geometric hooks and angular forms in deep red. Narrow guard bands in camel and cream frame the outer edge. A few patches of pile have worn low, and pale dots mark where the weave sits thin. It anchors a tight corridor, and the deep red notes keep the burgundy ground warm. At 3'7" by 8'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This runner keeps that deep palette, with the burgundy field and black cherry border sitting close in tone. The column of octagonal guls repeats the single motif down the length.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
