About this rug

A geometric lattice and a star-shaped medallion make this a lovely rug. A deep red field holds a tight geometric lattice of small rosettes and hooked diamonds in cream, gray brown and touches of steel blue. A large star-shaped medallion with a serrated near-black outline sits at the center, around a pale pink rosette. Gorgeous near-black spandrels with jagged cream edges anchor the four corners of the field. The main border runs terracotta, set with dark flower heads and angular motifs, framed by narrow guard stripes of deep red carrying small cream blossoms. The pile is full across the face and in every border. It suits a wood floor, letting the warm red and terracotta border hold the space together. At 4'4" by 9'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hosseinabad rugs

Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Several generations ago many of these rugs were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hosseinabad is a village name that appears across the Hamedan weaving country of western Persia. The drawing is geometric with a large central figure, and these are plain-spoken village rugs. This piece keeps that geometric character, with a bold star-shaped medallion at the center and a field of repeating diamond forms. The dense lattice of small motifs fills the red ground, giving the long format a busy, all-over rhythm.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
