About this rug

A column of sage and cream vases and pointed cartouches runs down this lovely rug. At the center, a column of sage and cream vases and pointed cartouches runs down the burgundy field. Slender stems carry small white flowers and sage leaves across the red ground. No single medallion anchors the design, which repeats along the length. A handsome charcoal main border holds pretty sage and rust leaves with small green rosettes. Narrow cream guard stripes with a small teal and brown zigzag run on either side. A few patches have worn low across the field, and the foundation shows in them. It suits a long passage, where the deep red ground and pale drawing hold their own. At 2'7" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

From the middle of the 1800s commercial carpet weaving revived in Persia, and Tabriz was one of its most important centers, weaving largely for Europe. Its weavers tie their knots with a small hooked knife instead of their fingers, and have been timed at faster than one knot a second. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Borders turn cleanly at the corners. Here the vases and flower sprays follow one another down the burgundy field in a set order. The charcoal border runs around them, and the cream guards edge it on both sides.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
