An open burgundy field with no medallion makes this a charming runner. The field is one long open stretch of burgundy with no medallion at the center. The plain ground carries no motif of its own, leaving the color to carry the runner. The border band turns each corner without separate corner pieces. A wide border on a deep red ground carries lovely cream scrolling vines and palmettes, edged in black and shaded in gray brown. The pile is low across the field, where the foundation shows as fine pale specks, while the border keeps more pile. In a narrow passage, the burgundy stretches out as one unbroken line. At 2'3" by 12'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Medallion carpet designs of the 16th century are usually associated with Tabriz, then the Safavid capital and the seat of the royal design workshops. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. This runner turns its border cleanly at the ends, with cream vine scrolls running its whole length. The open burgundy field carries no central piece to break the line.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
