Over the burgundy field of this lovely runner, small boteh repeat in black and navy. Over a burgundy field that reads crimson from across the room, rows of small boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, repeat in black and navy with touches of tan. There is no central medallion; the pattern runs the full length as a handsome all-over lattice. No corner pieces break the field, so the drawing continues to the very edge. The border is narrow, a salmon band with small dark crosses and diamonds, and a dark blue guard stripe runs along its inner edge. The pile is low in places across the red field, where scattered white flecks show. It brings a steady red line down a passage, and the blue stripe cools it. At 2'7" by 12'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. It had its rugs made less complex than traditional Persian carpets, so that they would not look out of place in European homes. Arak in central Persia, once known as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The villages around it sold under their own names, and what they share is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This runner keeps that all-over field, with small motifs set in close rows from end to end. Its palette is warmer than the restrained one named above, a bright red with blue and salmon at the edge.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
