A pale rose and cream border with scrolling vines and palmettes makes this a lovely rug. At the center, a plain field stretches the length of the runner, burgundy leaning toward plum and mottled with paler streaks. There is no medallion and there are no corner pieces. A single border in pale rose and cream carries pretty scrolling vines and palmettes on a darker plum ground, and it turns the corner cleanly at each end. The pile is worn low across the face in horizontal bands, and the foundation shows through in pale streaks. A long line of deep red fills a narrow passage, and the pale rose scrollwork cools it. At 2'8" by 13'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Centered medallions, borders that turn cleanly at the corners and vine scrolls planned in full before weaving began are the marks of Tabriz work. This runner keeps the scroll border, which turns each corner cleanly despite the wear. Its field is plain, with no medallion, so the border carries all the drawing.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
