About this rug

Guls worked in cream, rust and black sit in a single column on this charming runner. Within the deep red field sits a single column of guls, the tribal emblem, each worked in cream, rust and black around a small diamond core. Small dark stepped figures sit beside them along both sides of the column. The borders run deep red into burgundy and hold a procession of splendid stepped diamonds in cream and black. Narrow guard stripes of black, red and cream dashes run on each side. The pile has thinned along the central run of the field, and the red there reads paler, while the borders keep their full pile. It brings a bold red line to a pale floor, and the cream in every gul keeps the color from closing in. At 3'1" by 13', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

UNESCO added traditional Turkmen carpet making to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, with almost no variation from one figure to the next. On this runner the grid narrows to a single column, and each gul follows the last down the full length of the field. Because the drawing never changes, the interest sits in the color. A good Torkaman shifts between rust and brick as you walk across the room, and the rust inside each gul adds its own note against the red.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
