About this rug

Near-black hexagonal medallions alternate with tan panels on this lovely rug. Five shapes run down a burgundy field. Two near-black hexagonal medallions, each holding a pink pole and star flowers, alternate with three tan panels whose corners end in hooks. A small diamond closes each end, and a short row of tiny rosettes marks the join below the middle panel. A gorgeous cream main border frames it, with a dainty vine of round rosettes and paired leaves set between dark guard stripes and a band of small triangles. The pile is full from the field out to the border. Bright pink squares mark the corners of the middle panel, while the pale border sets off the dark centers. It brings burgundy warmth to a long hall with light walls. At 3'7" by 13'9", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. Persian Azerbaijan occupies the northwestern corner of the country. Rather than one style, it holds a family of village traditions that share a vocabulary: angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. This runner uses that vocabulary plainly. The hexagonal medallions are angular, the tan panels end in hooks, and the burgundy ground sits on the madder side of the palette. Pink is the brightest note, and it is used sparingly, in stars, squares and poles. Weaving in Persian Azerbaijan was made for houses in a cold region rather than for export.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
