About this rug

Delightful curled boteh outlined in pink repeat in rows over a near-black ground. Across a field that reads burgundy from afar, rows of curled boteh outlined in pink repeat over a near-black ground, with dainty rosettes in red and orange. The design is an all-over repeat with no central medallion, and it runs the full length of the rug. No spandrels break the pattern at the corners. A beautiful red main border carries cream stars with pink and orange bars. A salmon pink stripe and a fine cream-and-black check line close the border on the inside. The pile is full in the field and the border. It brings a warm, steady rhythm to a long room, and the cream notes keep the red from closing in. At 4'2" by 12'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a 16th-century carpet from the shrine of Shaikh Safi at Ardabil, the dynastic shrine of the Safavid shahs. High in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border, sits Ardabil. District weaving is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Runners and long formats are common there, and this rug has the long proportion. It keeps that strong contrast, with red, pink and orange set hard against a near-black ground. Instead of stepped outlines, the boteh curl in soft pink lines down the whole length.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
