About this rug

A single small steel blue medallion makes this a remarkable rug. Burgundy covers the field, where hooked diamonds, small leaf shapes and lattice lines repeat densely in red, near-black and cream. A single small medallion in steel blue with a red core sits at the middle, and small blue pieces close each corner of the field. The handsome main border is dark blue, set with pretty spaced flower heads and arrowheads in red and pink. Guard stripes of brown, red and blue run on either side. Full pile covers the face. The dense drawing keeps the red lively down a long hall, and the blue border steadies it. At 4'1" by 13', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hosseinabad rugs

Hamedan, the market city for the villages around it, is built partly on the mound of Ecbatana, the capital of Media, founded by Greek account around 678 BCE. Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Hosseinabad is a village name that appears across the Hamedan weaving country of western Persia. The drawing is geometric with a large central figure. These are plain-spoken village rugs. This rug keeps the geometric drawing, with its one central figure a small steel blue medallion in a long field of hooked diamonds. Spaced red and pink flower heads run around the dark blue border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
