Lovely angular rosettes and stepped motifs repeat down the length of the runner. Over a burgundy field, angular rosettes and stepped motifs in cream, pink, teal and ochre repeat down the length. Five splendid star medallions run down the center, two outlined in teal and one in ochre, each holding a cream and pink core. The border proper is deep red, carrying cream hooked scrolls and small ochre blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in gray brown, with delicate cream leaf chains, frame the border on both sides. The pile is worn low down the middle, and the foundation shows in places. It anchors a long passage, and the teal in the stars cools the red ground. At 3'7" by 13'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Gorevan rugs
The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, found Gorevans large and nearly square, and often larger than the carpets of Mashhad or Tabriz. Gorevan is a village in the Heriz district of northwestern Persia. It weaves in the same language as its better-known neighbor: big angular medallions, terracotta and copper against ivory, spandrels squared off at the corners. This runner has five star medallions in a row, outlined in teal, cream and ochre. Stepped shapes and small flowers in cream, pink and teal crowd the red field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
