Five hooked medallions step down the length of this remarkable runner. The field of this runner is deep red, packed with small angular figures in blue and gold. Five hooked medallions step down its length: navy at each end, a large ivory medallion at the center, and a smaller star with ivory rays above and below it. Each core holds a pale rectangle ringed with small squares. The wide navy border carries pretty hooked leaves and square rosettes, set between guard stripes of gold sawtooth triangles. The low pile keeps every edge crisp. It brings strong red and navy to a long, narrow space, and the ivory medallion gives the eye one bright place to rest. At 3'3" by 11', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Gorevan rugs
The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Gorevan is a village in the Heriz district of northwestern Persia. It weaves in the same language as its better-known neighbor: big angular medallions, terracotta and copper against ivory, spandrels squared off at the corners. This runner speaks that language in a long column, with five medallions stepping down the red where a single big medallion might sit. The departure is the palette: a true deep red and navy, with gold, blue and ivory to lift them, rather than terracotta and copper. Gorevan pieces were built for rooms that get walked through, and a hallway is exactly that.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
