Inside the navy main border runs a lovely gold guard stripe of small triangles. Four medallions step down a deep red field: navy at each end, an ivory medallion second from the top, and a gold star with an ivory core below it. Small flowers, rosettes and square figures in ivory and teal are scattered across the red. Pointed ivory spandrels with stepped inner edges close both ends. The handsome navy main border carries rosettes in ivory and teal between red hooked figures, and a wide gold guard stripe of small triangles runs inside it. Fine black outlines keep the small figures sharp in the short pile. It settles a narrow stretch of floor, and the run of navy, ivory and gold medallions keeps the eye moving. At 3'4" by 10'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Gorevan rugs
Heriz carpets as the trade knows them do not predate the middle of the 19th century, when they took the place of a rustic weaving made for local use. Gorevan is a village in the Heriz district of northwestern Persia. Its rugs speak the same language as its better-known neighbor: big angular medallions, terracotta and copper against ivory, spandrels squared off at the corners. Ivory does appear here, as pointed panels at both ends and as the ground of one medallion. It sits against a deep red field rather than copper. The medallions come four in a row, navy at both ends with ivory and gold between, in place of a single centerpiece. Gorevan pieces were built for rooms that get walked through, which suits a long runner.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
