About this rug

This runner is charming, with four stepped medallions along the middle. Angular motifs in near-black, cream and tan crowd the deep red field. Four splendid stepped medallions run along the middle, the first and last with cream cores and the two between with near-black stars around red centers. Cream spandrels sit at the two ends, holding small red and blue shapes. The main border is near-black, set with lovely stylized flower heads in red, cream and tan. Tan stripes with small steps and thin red lines flank the border on both sides. Low spots show across the field as pale specks. It suits a long passage, letting the strong red and near-black drawing lead the eye down its length. At 3'5" by 10'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gorevan rugs

The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Serapi rugs, a Heriz type, take their name from the village of Sirab, in the mountains between Tabriz and Ardabil. Gorevan is a village in the Heriz district of northwestern Persia. It weaves in the same language as its better-known neighbor: big angular medallions, terracotta and copper against ivory, spandrels squared off at the corners. This runner carries four angular medallions along the field, with squared cream spandrels at each end. The red ground sets the cream and near-black drawing in sharp relief.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
