About this rug

The navy and cream medallions make this a lovely rug. Down the burgundy field runs a line of beautiful angular medallions: dark navy at each end, rose beside them, and cream at the center. Each is outlined in pale blue or violet, with graceful curled tips and a small cartouche at its core. Crosses and leaf devices in rose and blue sit in the red between them. Small blocks sit in the four corners of the field, with more devices past the last medallions. The cream main border holds small red and blue flower heads between triangles, with a narrow zigzag guard stripe inside it. A few low, paler spots in the red show where the pile has thinned. The navy and cream medallions do the work in a narrow space, with the red setting the warmth. At 2'11" by 10'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gorevan rugs

Heriz carpets as the trade knows them do not predate the middle of the 19th century, when they took the place of a rustic weaving made for local use. The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Gorevan, a village near Heriz in northwestern Persia, borrows the angular vocabulary of its famous neighbor. Many Gorevan layouts center on a big medallion, with terracotta and copper on an ivory ground. On a runner that plan stretches along the length, so the medallions become a line of narrower lozenges that shift from navy to rose to cream as they go. Ivory moves out to the border here, and the field is burgundy instead of terracotta. That makes it a deeper, redder Gorevan than the terracotta kind.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
