About this rug

Rows of stepped gul figures on a burgundy field make this a lovely rug. A burgundy field carries rows of splendid stepped gul figures outlined in a dark brown that reads almost black, each with an ivory and orange core. Gul means flower in Persian, and these are the tribal emblem of the weavers. Small crosses with dotted arms sit in the spaces between rows, and the repeat carries straight to the border, leaving no room for a center figure or corner pieces. A pretty red leaf scroll against dark brown makes the border, framed by a narrow band of tiny diamonds and an orange and ivory twisted guard stripe. The red eases a shade lighter in places along the center. It anchors a long stretch of floor in burgundy and dark brown, and the ivory flecks keep the repeat lively. At 4'3" by 12'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

The Salor, Tekke, Yomut and Ersari tribes each wove a recognizable variety of the Turkmen design. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, and it is the opposite. Because the figure never changes, the interest of a Torkaman is in how the red moves between rust, brick and deeper reds as you cross the room. This rug keeps to the grid in every row, with small crosses between the gul and dark brown outlines setting each one apart. Its one departure is a soft lightening of the red in patches along the center, mostly in the upper half.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
