About this rug

Each of the three large octagonal medallions sits on a dark brown ground in this lovely rug. Geometric octagons and pairs of small rosettes fill the deep red field in a column down the length. Three large octagonal medallions anchor the design, each on a dark brown ground with a central diamond and small hooked details in cream, blue and orange. Between them, pairs of dainty rosettes in brown, orange and gold are joined by a short navy bar. The main border is cream, carrying a hooked vine in navy and rust, between narrow guard stripes of orange and gray triangles. The pile runs low across the face. It anchors a narrow passage with strong graphic weight, the dark octagons standing hard against the red. At 4' by 12'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The famous Ardabil Carpet has a twin, made for the same shrine at Ardabil and kept today in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. Runners and other long formats are common. This rug keeps the strong contrast, with dark brown medallions set hard against the red. Its medallions are octagons, three of them stacked down the length, rather than stepped forms. A cream border with a navy hooked vine frames the red.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
