About this rug

Red, rose and blue flower heads in a lattice make this an amazing rug. The field looks burgundy at first glance, but a dense lattice of red, rose and blue flower heads covers the dark indigo ground. No central medallion breaks the all-over repeat, which runs in gold and pale blue accents among delicate curved leaves. The main border is deep red, carrying large blue blossoms and cream figures, flanked by guard stripes in antique gold with charming scrolling vines. The pile runs full from edge to edge. It anchors a long hallway, and the cool blue accents lift the heavy red ground. At 4'5" by 10'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the start. That means a wide field, generous spacing between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. Because the design is not crowded, a Mahal reads calm across a big room. This rug keeps the floral vocabulary of the region. A close lattice packs the field tightly, and the palette is saturated rather than soft.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
