About this rug

Across the black field of this delightful rug, small rosettes float in three loose columns. Across a black field, small rosettes in pale blue and red, each with a green center, float in three loose columns down the length. There is no medallion, only this scatter of charming flowers seen from above. The field has no corner pieces and runs open to the very edge. A thin red edge binds both sides, and no guard stripes separate it from the field. The pile is full and dense across the face, and the black stays deep. A dark line with small points of color runs through a passage. At 2'3" by 12'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gabbeh rugs

Gabbeh is a style rather than a place: tribal weaving from the Zagros country of southern Persia, with a long pile and almost no pattern. The Metropolitan Museum of Art owns a gabbeh of the late 19th century, which came to it with the Ballard Collection in 1922. Some early rugs of the Lur and Qashqai tribes of Fars were lion rugs, the whole field taken up by one large lion. A field of one or two colors may carry a stylized animal or a few blocks. They were woven for a family’s own floor, not for sale. This runner keeps that spare habit, one black ground carrying only a scatter of small rosettes. Those repeated flowers are more drawing than the type usually shows.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
