About this rug

A dense repeat of tan boteh makes this a charming rug. The deep red field carries a dense repeat of tan boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, each set on a small green base. There is no central medallion; the boteh run in straight rows down the entire length of the rug. The main border is tan, carrying lovely scrolls in near-black and red. Narrow guard stripes of cream with small green and near-black marks, edged in gold, line both sides of this frame. The pile is low in places across the field, where the foundation shows faintly. It suits a narrow passage, where the steady rhythm of tan shapes breaks up the long red ground. At 2'7" by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Medallion carpet designs of the 16th century are usually associated with Tabriz, then the Safavid capital and the seat of the royal design workshops. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Centered medallions, borders that turn cleanly at the corners and vine scrolls planned in full before weaving began are the marks of Tabriz work. This runner has no medallion, but its border turns cleanly at each corner. The boteh stand in straight rows down the red field, framed by a tan border of near-black and red scrolls.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
