About this rug

Large near-black stepped forms flank a central column on this charming rug. On a deep red field, large near-black stepped forms flank a central column of geometric figures. A near-black octagonal medallion sits at the center, holding a brown and cream core with a small cross motif inside. Gorgeous cream square spandrels with brown geometric crosses mark each corner of the red ground. A narrow dark brown border runs around the edge, carrying small red and cream marks in a repeating line. The pile shows pale specks in a few patches across the near-black areas. It holds a strong graphic weight in a small space, balancing the heavy near-black shapes against the warm red ground. At 2'11" by 5'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Saveh rugs

The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds paintings by Habiballah of Sava, an older spelling of Saveh, who worked in the years around 1590 to 1610. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. The palette is warm, built on madder red with cream and indigo alongside. This rug keeps the straight-edged medallion and the warm red palette, though the filling is strictly geometric rather than floral. The large near-black stepped shapes create a bold contrast against the red field, framing the central octagon and the smaller diamond forms above and below it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
