About this rug

A column of stepped diamond guls repeats down this lovely runner. Across a deep red field, a column of stepped diamond guls repeats, outlined in near-black with cream steps. Each figure holds a smaller red lozenge at its center, framed by stepped outlines that connect down the length of the rug. A gorgeous burgundy border carries a geometric scroll motif in dark brown and cream along the sides, edged by thin stripes. Here and there the pile is low, and the red reads paler where the foundation shows. The dark brown geometric pattern gives a narrow passage weight. At 2'11" by 5'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that repeating structure, with a vertical line of diamond shapes filling the long field. The geometric drawing runs straight down the center within a frame of scrolling forms.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
