Large diamond shapes with navy rosette cores run down this lovely rug. Across a deep red field, a column of large diamond shapes runs down the center, and every one carries a charming navy rosette core. Small navy geometric forms and stepped motifs fill the red ground between these main figures. The wide border carries a repeat of tree-like forms and small flowers in red and navy. A cream sawtooth edge runs along the outer side. Wear shows as pale patches here and there, where the foundation appears. The navy forms hold the red in place, making a bold line through a narrow space. At 3'1" by 6'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This piece keeps the navy outlines and the recurring geometric vocabulary. The red field stays bright against the navy forms, and the diamond chain extends through the center of the rug.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
