About this rug

Rows of stepped diamond medallions make this a lovely rug. On a deep red field, rows of stepped diamond medallions repeat down the length, each holding a near-black geometric core. Small cream hooks outline these shapes against the warm ground. The ends carry panels of near-black circles and square motifs instead of corner spandrels. A gorgeous dark burgundy main border runs a scroll of geometry, edged by thin bands of cream and near-black teeth. A few patches across the center have thinned, where the red reads paler and the weave shows through. The dense drawing holds the eye in a narrow space, keeping the rust and black notes close. At 3'1" by 6'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. Here the small format holds the repeating diamond lattice down the field. The palette stays within deep red, dark burgundy and near-black, with cream picking out the stepped edges.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
