Octagonal guls repeat in a dense lattice on this lovely runner. Across a deep red field, rows of octagonal guls repeat in a dense lattice, worked in near-black and burgundy with small touches of orange. There is no central medallion, only the steady repeat of the drawing from end to end. A narrow main border in deep red carries small geometric figures in near-black and orange, with small orange diamond motifs along its length. A few patches near the center have thinned, and the red reads paler where white specks appear. The dense drawing holds the eye on a narrow floor. At 2'11" by 6', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug sets near-black geometry against a saturated red ground. The repeating gul fills the field in a strict grid, a compact layout for a narrow floor.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
