Octagonal guls alternate with diamond motifs in rows on this charming rug. On a deep red field, rows of gorgeous octagonal guls in cream and near-black alternate with smaller diamond motifs. They sit in a strict grid across the center. A wide red border carries small geometric shapes in dark brown, set between narrow guard stripes. The red reads paler across the center. It holds a strong graphic line, the cream in each gul lifting the near-black drawing. At 3'7" by 6'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that small scale and the repeating gul motif. The deep red ground and the near-black geometric drawing fit that tradition.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
