About this rug

Octagonal guls framing an eight-pointed star make this a lovely rug. The deep red field holds two columns of octagonal guls, each framing an eight-pointed star outlined in cream. Small diamond shapes and cross motifs fill the spaces between these larger figures. Stepped brackets project from the sides of the central panel into the surrounding ground. A beautiful red border carries a row of navy diamond figures with small cream centers. Narrow guard stripes frame this main band. The pile is low in places across the middle, where white specks show the foundation. It grounds a narrow passage, and the cream outlines brighten the deep reds. At 3'7" by 6'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug has eight guls in two columns along the field, each with a star at its center. The cream outlines stand out clearly on the red.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
