Geometric medallions in near-black and cream repeat in rows on this charming runner. Across a deep red field, rows of beautiful geometric medallions in near-black and cream repeat down the length. Each diamond shape holds a small cream flower at its center, set against a near-black ground. The main border is near-black, carrying a bold zigzag pattern in deep red along both sides. Narrow guard stripes with small cream dots separate the wide frame from the central panel. The pile has thinned in a few patches, with scattered white flecks visible on the surface. It anchors a narrow passage, letting the near-black forms contrast sharply with the warm red base. At 3'3" by 6'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Baluch rugs
A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Their palette is the darkest in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps that deep palette. The repeating diamond motifs fill the field in a strict column, using only red, near-black and cream.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
