About this rug

Stylized trees in square compartments make this a charming rug. Over a deep red ground, rows of square compartments hold stylized trees, stepped diamonds, rosettes and chevrons in cream, dark brown and orange. The layout repeats these garden panels down the length with no central medallion in the field. A gorgeous burgundy main border, turning at each corner, carries a row of small cream and brown shapes. A few patches across the face are worn low, where tiny white dots show the weave beneath. The warm red and cream notes stay clear against the burgundy frame. At 3'4" by 6'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Bakhtiari rugs

The Bakhtiari move their flocks 150 miles each year between winter pastures in the plains and summer pastures in the mountains. The 1925 film Grass followed that migration, with the men swimming the Karun River for three days beside rafts buoyed by inflated goatskins. Bakhtiari weaving comes from the Zagros mountains of western Persia, and its signature is the garden panel. The field is divided into a grid of compartments, each one holding its own tree, vase or flowering plant. This rug keeps that grid layout, with every square framing a distinct geometric motif. The deep red ground sets the cream and dark brown drawings hard against one another, while the burgundy border frames the repeating panels.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
