A cream diamond medallion holds rust motifs on this remarkable rug. At the center, a cream diamond medallion holds rust and brown motifs on a deep red field. Small dark green and cream motifs fill the rest of the ground in a dense repeat. Beautiful cream corner pieces sit at both short ends of the field. The main border is burgundy, carrying small cream and rust marks along its length. The pile is full over the whole face. It brings a warm red line to a narrow passage, cooled by the small green notes. At 3'2" by 6'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Alexander the Great gathered the Persian treasure and left it at Ecbatana, now Hamedan, in the keeping of his chief treasurer Harpalus. His closest friend Hephaestion died there in the autumn of 324 BCE. Villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses. This rug keeps that long shape and a dense geometric drawing. The deep red ground carries a single cream medallion and rows of small repeating motifs down its length.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
