About this rug

A column of three stepped medallions runs down this lovely rug. Three stepped medallions stack in a column down the center of a deep red field. Each beautiful medallion holds a small diamond core in red and black. Small geometric figures in brick and near-black fill the ground between the large shapes. Cream panels with brown motifs sit at the sides of the central column. The main border is deep red, carrying a row of small black diamonds with white centers. Narrow guard stripes with cream wave lines run along the border. The pile has thinned in a few patches, and the foundation shows in small spots. Its red and near-black tones stay close together in the corner. At 3'11" by 7'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. Baluch weaving is the work of semi-nomadic groups in eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Portable looms kept the formats small, and the weavers returned to a short list of motifs from camp to camp. This rug stays within that small size, with stepped medallions and repeated figures. Cream panels brighten an otherwise near-black and red ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
