This remarkable rug has a cream diamond medallion in the middle. On a deep red field, rows of small geometric diamonds and stylized arrow motifs scatter around a central shape. A cream diamond medallion sits in the middle, holding a smaller red lozenge and black rosettes within its outline. Stepped chevron bands in red, orange and cream close the top and bottom ends of the composition. The main border is violet, carrying a repeat of beautiful star shapes in rust, cream and green, framed by narrow tan and black stripes. The pile is full from edge to edge. The warm red and cool violet sit side by side in a compact drawing. At 3'11" by 6'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. Hamedan is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan weavers work in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine narrow vintage rugs come from here. This rug keeps that geometric vocabulary, with stepped forms and bold contrast between the red ground and the cream drawing. The violet border adds a cool frame around the warm field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
