About this rug

A medallion with stepped sides stands in a red field on this delightful rug. At the center, a splendid dark brown and navy medallion with stepped sides sits in a deep red field dotted with small geometric rosettes. The red field forms a shaped panel with notched, stepped sides. Dark brown ground fills the areas beside it, holding rows of cream and red rosettes. The main border is cream, carrying a chain of pretty round flower heads in gold, navy and rust. Narrow bands of red triangles and navy lines frame the border on both sides. The pile is full and even. It suits a room that needs warmth, the bright red ground lifting the dark brown sides. At 4'2" by 6'4", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Saveh rugs

The story goes that Saveh held one of the greatest libraries of the East until the Mongols destroyed it on their first invasion of Persia. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds paintings by Habiballah of Sava, an older spelling of Saveh, who worked in the years around 1590 to 1610. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. This rug keeps that mix, with a sharp stepped outline around the central shape and flower heads filling the dark corners. The palette is warm, built on madder red with cream and indigo alongside. The strong red panel sets the dark brown sides in high relief.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
