A column of three connected diamonds makes this a remarkable rug. Delicate stepped vines and small rosettes fill the deep red field, broken by cream shapes that hold brown geometric forms. A column of three connected diamonds runs down the center, each with a gray core and stepped edges in cream. The main border is dark brown, set with scrolling hooks and checkered squares in camel and red. Narrow guard stripes with small crosses and dots in cream and red edge the wide band on either side. The pile is full from end to end. The cream steps lighten the red, and the rug tucks neatly into a corner. At 4'1" by 6'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Bakhtiari rugs
The Bakhtiari are divided into two main groups, the Chahar Lang, or Four Legs, and the Haft Lang, or Seven Legs. In 1909 Bakhtiari tribesmen under the chief Sardar Assad captured Tehran in a successful campaign for constitutional reform. Bakhtiari weaving comes from the Zagros mountains of western Persia, and its signature is the garden panel. The weavers were people who moved their herds twice a year. This rug keeps the stepped drawing of the region, but it stacks diamonds down the center instead of a grid of compartments. The deep red ground is bright against the cream, and the border carries a distinct hook pattern.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
