Rows of octagonal gul motifs in cream and near-black cover this lovely rug. Rows of beautiful octagonal gul motifs and smaller cross shapes fill the deep red field in cream and near-black. The pattern repeats across the whole surface with no central medallion or corner pieces to break the grid. A few patches of pile on the face have thinned. Small lozenge forms sit inside each gul, and the edges of the rug end in the same repeat. The warm red ground fills a corner without needing bright accents. At 4'4" by 6'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
Turkmen tradition holds the Salor to be an ancient tribe of high status. The Metropolitan Museum of Art calls its Salor main carpet rare and of unusual beauty, and sees such carpets as the models from which other Turkmen tribes derived their own. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This piece maintains that exacting layout, placing the cream and near-black forms firmly on the red base. The geometry stays sharp across the whole surface.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
