About this rug

Octagonal gul motifs stand three across and eight down on this delightful rug. Set within a deep red field, rows of handsome octagonal gul motifs, three across and eight down, repeat in a strict grid, picked out in cream and near-black. Small diamond shapes sit between the larger emblems, filling the open ground. The wide border is made of diagonal bands filled with small cream and dark diamonds, framed by narrow bands of cream and black. The pile is full over the rug, leaving the geometric drawing clear. It anchors a reading corner, where the warm red tones settle the space. At 4'1" by 5'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A Turkmen girl was already an experienced weaver by the time she was old enough to marry, often shortly before she turned twenty. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, and it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. A good Torkaman shifts between rust and brick as you cross the room. This rug keeps that strict grid, with the octagonal figures set in even rows down the length. The color stays close to one warmth, a deep red that holds the rust and brick notes together rather than shifting sharply between them.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
