Yes. Every rug we sell is a one-of-a-kind, hand-knotted vintage piece, typically forty to eighty years old, in wool on a cotton foundation. It is professionally washed, repaired where needed and inspected before it is photographed and listed.

About this rug

Two linked diamond medallions in slate blue and rust sit on this amazing rug. At the center, two linked diamond medallions in slate blue and rust sit on a deep red field scattered with small geometric crosses. Handsome stepped slate blue pieces fill the top and bottom of the field, holding pink and orange motifs within their jagged outlines. The main border is rust, carrying a chain of pink and red geometric forms. Thin bands of zigzag lines in cream, pink and slate blue edge the rust border on either side. The pile is full across the face. It sets the warm red ground against the cool slate blue accents. At 4'5" by 6', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

About Shiraz rugs

UNESCO records that the women of Fars design, choose the colors and weave without a cartoon, so that no weaver makes two carpets of the same design. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and rugs sold under its name were woven by the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric, and small stylized animals and birds turn up in the field. No two are laid out quite the same way. This rug keeps that geometric drawing in its stepped spandrels and angular central diamonds. Unlike the asymmetry often seen in Shiraz rugs, the two linked medallions here match exactly, giving the field a balanced structure.

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
