Rows of small figures run down this charming rug. The deep red field holds rows of small figures in ochre, cream and near-black. The design runs down the length without a single medallion, and the red ground continues to the edges without corner pieces. A wide border of cream carries dainty round rosettes and small cross shapes in rust and dark brown. Narrow guard stripes in dark red and orange frame this light band on both sides. Pile runs low in spots, with pale patches revealing the weave beneath. The warm red and pale cream band suit a restrained room. At 4'1" by 6'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ferdos rugs
Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. Ferdos is in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, in the same weaving belt as Birjand and Mashhad. This rug keeps the repeating field without a single medallion, setting rows of figures against the red ground. The cream border sets a light frame around the red center, carrying round rosettes in rust and brown.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
