About this rug

A diamond lattice holds a flowering plant in each cell of this lovely rug. A deep red field carries a gorgeous diamond lattice, each cell holding a small stylized flowering plant in navy, olive and cream. A splendid central diamond medallion sits at the heart, worked in navy and cream with a stepped outline. Navy fills the four corners, crowded with small blossoms and leaves. The wide outer border carries cream and gold motifs, flanked by narrow guard stripes in cream. A few patches show the white foundation across the field. It brings the red and navy together in a room without taking over. At 4'2" by 6'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Joshaghan rugs

The silk carpets around the sarcophagus of Shah Abbas II in the shrine at Qom were signed and dated by a master, Ni’mat Allah of Joshaghan. In the reign of Nadir Shah the carpet weaving of the Joshaghan district received a new impulse, and it flourished until nearly the middle of the 19th century. Joshaghan sits north of Isfahan in central Persia, where weavers favor a diamond lattice filled with small plants. This rug keeps that lattice and the small plants in every cell. The red ground stays strong against the navy corners and the cream drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
