About this rug

Stepped cream lines frame a central diamond medallion in this lovely rug. Across a deep red field, stepped cream lines frame a handsome central diamond medallion with a small geometric core in orange and gray. A dark brown ground fills the area around and beyond the medallion, with a column of bare trees at the bottom and scattered sprigs on the red. Dark branching forms and stepped pieces fill the corners. A wide dark brown main border displays cream geometric figures and small rosettes, a flower seen from above, inside a cream outer band. Narrow guard stripes in cream and dark brown flank the border on each side. Pile runs low in spots over the field, and the bare weave shows through in several thin areas. It grounds a reading nook, the dark border containing the bright red center. At 4'5" by 6'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Toyserkan rugs

Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Toyserkan sits in Hamedan province in western Persia, in a district of small weaving villages that supplied the Hamedan market. The drawing is geometric and unfussy. This rug keeps that plain geometric character, with bold stepped outlines defining the field against the dark frame. While long formats are common because that is what the houses needed, this piece uses the same village vocabulary in a shorter room size. Scattered sprigs in the red ground leave the field open around the central diamond, rather than forming the strict lattice often seen elsewhere.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
