About this rug

A stepped diamond medallion in dark brown makes this a wonderful rug. Set within a deep red field, scattered sprays of teal leaves and dark blossoms surround a central shape. A gorgeous stepped diamond medallion in dark brown holds a cream core with a red rosette and notched pendants at the top and bottom. Large dark brown stepped pieces with serrated edges occupy the four corners, holding small pink flowers. The border is a narrow burgundy band, carrying a scroll of small motifs, flanked by guard stripes of cream and teal zigzags. Full pile covers the face. It holds the eye with strong madder red and dark brown set hard against the cream center. At 4'3" by 6'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Toyserkan rugs

Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Several generations ago many of these rugs were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Toyserkan sits in Hamedan province in western Persia, in a district of small weaving villages that supplied the Hamedan market. The drawing is geometric and unfussy. This rug keeps that geometry in the stepped outline of the medallion and the jagged edges of the corner pieces. Unlike the strictly angular type often seen in Toyserkan rugs, the scattered floral sprays in the red field add a softer line to the bold dark brown shapes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
