About this rug

Octagonal guls in strict rows make this a lovely rug. Across a red field, rows of gorgeous octagonal guls repeat in a strict grid, each holding brown, cream and black geometry. Smaller diamond medallions and motifs sit between the larger figures, filling the ground with near-black outlines. No corner spandrels interrupt the field, which stays uniform from end to end. The burgundy main border holds a row of tiny triangles in cream and black between thin guard stripes. Low pile shows in places, with pale specks across the face. At 4' by 6'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A Yomud main carpet of the mid-1850s at the Cleveland Museum of Art has an aubergine ground, and the decorated skirts at each end are its rarest feature. A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field. The drawing hardly changes, so the life of the piece is in the color. On this rug the red shifts between bright and deep as the eye travels down the rows. The brown and cream inside each gul stand out against the saturated ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
