About this rug

A diamond medallion in camel and cream holds the center of this lovely rug. Set within a deep red field, a central diamond medallion in camel and cream holds a small rosette core. Pendants extend from the upper and lower ends of this center piece, flanked by charming curling vines and small blossoms in sage and steel blue. The main border runs near-black, filled with scrolling vines and rosettes in camel, red and green. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pile is worn low across the red ground, and the foundation shows. It grounds a narrow passage, the near-black frame containing the bright red center. At 3'7" by 7'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

The Textile Museum in Washington names Sabzevar, Herat, Mashhad and Dorokhsh among the Khorasan cities cited as sources of fine carpets. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In eastern Persia’s Khorasan region, Ferdos shares a weaving belt with Birjand and Mashhad. Its rugs tend toward the curvilinear drawing of eastern Persia, on a palette of madder red and indigo. This runner keeps that curvilinear vine work in the border and the floral sprays around the center. The diamond medallion sits on the madder red ground, framed by the near-black scrolling border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
