A vertical column of two large stepped medallions runs down this charming rug. Small blue rosettes and two large stepped medallions fill the deep red field. The medallions stack in a vertical column, outlined in cream and steel blue. Cream corner pieces with blue fills sit at the four corners. A splendid burgundy main border carries pretty pink and blue flower heads, closed by a narrow cream guard stripe. A few patches through the middle have worn low, and tiny white marks show. It brings a warm red line to a narrow floor, cooled by the blue. At 3'11" by 7'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ferdos rugs
Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. In eastern Persia’s Khorasan region, Ferdos shares a weaving belt with Birjand and Mashhad. This rug pairs steel blue rosettes with a saturated red ground. The two stepped medallions anchor the length, and the corner pieces frame the field with cream hooked lines.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
