About this rug

A gold and orange hexagonal medallion sits between two vase-like floral forms on this remarkable rug. Worked on a deep red field, three large figures align down the center. A gorgeous gold and orange hexagonal medallion with violet and red rings sits between two vase-like floral forms in green, white and blue with pretty curling stems. The main border is navy, carrying a white scroll with red flowers and gold leaves. The red of the field runs straight to the border, with no guard stripes. Full pile covers the rug. The bright red ground warms the navy border at the corner. At 4'2" by 7'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. Ferdos lies in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, in the same weaving belt as Birjand and Mashhad. The rugs tend toward the curvilinear drawing of eastern Persia, with repeating floral fields rather than a single dominant medallion, and a palette built on madder red and indigo. This rug keeps that madder red and indigo palette, but rather than a repeating field, it places a single hexagonal medallion at the center. The floral forms above and below echo the curvilinear style of the region.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
